Just before America settled into one of the largest sporting events of the year, the Super Bowl, East Whiteland firefighters were dispatched at 1819 hrs (6:19 pm) along with Station 4 (Malvern) and Station 56 (Goshen) for a reported building fire at the Outback Steakhouse in the 600 block of Lancaster Ave in East Whiteland Township.
Initial 9-1-1 calls indicated that the dining room of the restaurant was filing up was school, and that the building was being evacuated.
Within moments, Engine 5-3 went en-route, and arrived shortly thereafter. Engine 5-3 established a large diameter supply line from a nearby hydrant and positioned in front of the restaurant, while crews went inside to search for the source of the smoke. Engine 5-2 arrived shortly thereafter and crews assisted engine 5-3 on the interior, while Ladder 4 arrived and sent crews to the roof.
Interior crews reported an odor of burnt rubber with the smoke condition dissipating. Crews from Ladder 4 and Engine 5-2 checked the roof while Engine 5-3, Engine 56 and Engine 54-1 checked the interior. Crews determined the cause of the smoke condition to be an HVAC unit on the roof. The unit was secured and all units cleared a short time later.
