U.S. 30/Exton Bypass Ramp to U.S. 202 North Reduced to One Lane for Nine Months Beginning Wednesday Morning

King of Prussia, PA — The ramp from eastbound U.S. 30/Exton Bypass to northbound U.S. 202 north in East Whiteland and West Whiteland townships, Chester County, will be reduced from two-lanes-to-one for approximately nine months beginning Wednesday morning, April 11, following a rescheduled operation to set a new traffic pattern and begin replacement of the ramp’s deteriorated concrete pavement, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Crews will set up the single-lane traffic pattern on the ramp during Monday night’s scheduled activities. Originally scheduled for overnight Friday, April 6, the single-lane traffic pattern set-up on the ramp was postponed due to weather.

Beginning Wednesday morning, April 11, motorists on eastbound U.S. 30/Exton Bypass approaching U.S. 202 should allow extra time for travel through the work area, or use an alternate route, as significant backups are expected during the morning and afternoon rush hours through late fall for the duration of the ramp repair operation.

In addition to the ramp restriction, crews will reduce northbound U.S. 202 to a single lane and close the northbound U.S. 202 ramp to Business U.S. 30 for two nights next week for installation of construction barrier.

The work schedule is:

- Monday, April 9, through Friday, April 13, from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from the U.S. 30/Exton Bypass to northbound U.S. 202 will be closed for construction. U.S. 30 motorists heading for northbound U.S. 202 will be directed to exit at Business U.S. 30, turn right on Business U.S. 30, then turn right onto the ramp to northbound U.S. 202;

- Tuesday, April 10, and Wednesday, April 11, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, northbound U.S. 202 will be reduced to a single lane between the Boot Road and Route 401 interchanges for installation of temporary construction barrier; and

- Tuesday, April 10, and Wednesday, April 11, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from northbound U.S. 202 to Business U.S. 30 will be closed due to the closure of the northbound right lane on U.S. 202 for installation of construction barrier.

All scheduled activities are weather permitting.

The ramp repairs and other activities at the interchange are being done under PennDOT’s $26.4 million project that also includes rehabilitation of the northbound and southbound U.S. 202 bridges over Amtrak at the U.S. 30 Interchange. PennDOT late last year completed replacement of the deteriorated concrete from the outside lane of the two-lane ramp from southbound U.S. 202 to U.S. 30 and the U.S. 30/Exton Bypass.

PennDOT added the ramp work after discovering during widening and reconstruction of U.S. 202 Section 330 that the original concrete, placed during construction of the U.S. 30/Exton Bypass during the mid-1990s, was deteriorating due to a chemical reaction between the concrete’s sand and cement known by engineers as ASR (alkali-silica reaction).

Allan A Myers, Inc. of Worcester, Montgomery County, is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
