January 30, 2017

As part of continued training on hazardous materials, active crew members of the East Whiteland Fire Company gathered at Station 5 on Monday evening with a session on gas meters and detecting dangerous gasses. It was mentioned on a previous emergency call for a carbon monoxide alarm, fire department personnel entered the home and immediately detected a substantial level of carbon monoxide. The family members had vacated the residence and were waiting outside. A faulty heater was found to be the source. Utilizing air packs, fire department personnel ventilated the building while the family made plans to stay elsewhere until the heater could be repaired. We always recommend and urge residents to have and maintain working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Carbon monoxide cannot be detected by smell or sight, therefore it is vital for everyone to exit the building and call 9-1-1 when the alarm sounds. It is never an inconvenience for us to respond. We would much rather respond to ensure your safety.
